Why does laser hair removal take so long?

Almost everyone knows that laser hair removal is a permanent solution to unwanted hair, but a lot of people are shocked when they find out that it generally takes about 18 months to two years to get the optimal results from your treatments.

The reason that it takes so long to get the results that you want is that the laser is only able to treat hair that is on its active growth cycle. At any given time, only about 10% of your hair is actively growing. With each treatment you can see up to a 30% reduction in hair growth.

Another reason that it takes so long to finish laser is that your hair grows in cycles. There is only about 10% of your hair growing at any given time, and it takes a while for the next 10% to enter their active growth stage. Different areas of the body grow hair at different rates, so there are certain intervals that you have to get treated on to see optimal results. Facial areas grow hair fastest, so they can be treated every 4-6 weeks. Arm and leg hair grows the slowest, so they have to be treated every 8-10 weeks, and the rest of your body hair grows at about the same rate, so they can be treated every 6-8 weeks.

Brand new trick to help with the pain of laser hair removal

Everyone experiences pain differently, but most people agree that the last few laser hair removal treatments can get pretty painful. Although the pain doesn't hold a candle to the pain of a wax, it still can be uncomfortable.

Simplicity offers a few options to help with the pain. We use a cooling Zimmer, which blows cold air onto the area as a way to numb it from the pain. We also offer a desensitizing gel that we recommend applying 20-30 minutes before your treatment.

We talked to our customers to get their recommendations for helping with the pain, and we discovered a brand new trick to help soften the sting of the laser. Next time you get treated, apply your desensitizing gel 20-30 minutes prior to your treatment as usual. Then, 10 minutes prior to your treatment, reapply your desensitizing gel. This trick is a surefire solution to help minimize the pain as much as possible during your treatments.

If you're interested in getting your own bottle of desensitizing gel, just click on the link below to add it to your cart.

What hair color works best for laser hair removal?

At Simplicity Laser, we can treat all hair colors, but blonde, red, gray, and white hair doesn’t yield the same quality results as brown and black hair. People with light hair can expect about a 20% hair reduction. These hair colors are difficult to treat because they have little blood supply and minimal pigment, the two things the laser targets.

Laser hair removal works by emitting a pulse of light that is absorbed by the pigmentation and blood supply of the hair follicle. When the light is absorbed by the hair follicle, it is converted to heat, which then destroys the follicle. When the hair follicle is destroyed, it is unable to re-grow hair.

Brunettes of the world, let down your dark hair and celebrate! Stop cursing dark upper lip hair or course underarm hair and just get it lasered away.

My laser results (one year in)

In March of 2015, I got my first laser hair removal treatment ever from Simplicity Laser. I got my underarms and Brazilian area treated. Now that it has officially been a year since I started treatments, I thought I’d recap my experience and results so far.

Results

Since I started, I’ve had nine underarm treatments and eight Brazilian treatments. Before starting, both my underarm and Brazilian hair was black and coarse. The first thing I noticed after my first few treatments is that the hair was slower to grow back. I went from shaving my underarms every other day to once a week after three treatments.

At this point, the hair isn’t 100% gone, but I have noticed a lot of changes. The hair that grows back is very thin now, so it is harder to notice. The hair also takes weeks to grow back in. There are also spots that I don’t grow any hair at all anymore. The remaining hair that grows comes in small patches. After each treatment, I notice that the patches of hair become smaller and smaller. For the Brazilian area specifically, all hair on the sides (outside of where a swimsuit would cover) has completely disappeared.

Treatments

The treatments I’ve received have all been very fast and convenient. An underarms appointment takes less than five minutes, and a Brazilian appointment takes 5-10 minutes. By now, the pain from the treatments has increased significantly. However, it is not nearly as bad as a wax, and the pain doesn’t last long. Around the fifth or sixth treatment I started using the numbing cream, which significantly helps take the edge off.

Overall, I am pleased with the results so far. When I first started, it seemed weird that laser hair removal takes so many treatments, but now I understand why. Although my results are significantly better than when I started, I believe I will need to go through the whole 18 months worth of treatments to get full results. I understand that everyone's results are different, but I love mine!

I am already seeing how convenient it is! I went from going through one disposable razor every two weeks to one razor every two months. It's going to be perfect for swimsuit season!

10 things you need to know before starting laser hair removal

It actually works

The number one question we get is “Does it actually work?” Most Simplicity customers achieve 70-90% reduction by the time they reach their clinical end point. Check out our testimonials and this customer spotlight!

Research the type of laser used

Make sure you are getting treated by a real laser, not an IPL, to ensure better results. We use ND:YAG and Alexandrite lasers from Candela because they are the most effective lasers on the market and allow us to treat any skin color and type. Check out this blog post for more details.

Hair color matters

Laser hair removal is most effective on brown and black hair. However, our lasers can treat all skin types.

It doesn’t have to break the bank

Traditionally, laser hair removal is famous for costing thousands of dollars. At Simplicity Laser, you can get eight treatments for only $79. Talk about affordable!

It’s a commitment

Be suspicious of anyone who advertises instant, permanent results. Laser hair removal typically take 18 months (with 4-8 week intervals) to reach a clinical end point. You need multiple treatments in order to target all hair follicles, not just active follicles. Click here for more information about hair growth cycles.

There are things you can do to help with the pain

Laser hair removal feels kind of like being snapped with a rubber band. However, we use a Zimmer cooling machine that blows continuous cold, numbing air on your skin during your laser treatment to make sure you are comfortable. We also sell topical anesthetic to help numb the skin before treatments.

The sun is not your friend during your laser treatments

Before and after laser hair removal treatments you need to stay out of the sun for 7-14 days. Also, you need to avoid sunless tanning and spray tan products. Pick up a Zinc Oxide sunscreen to help protect your skin in between treatments.

Using certain products can help maximize results

The healthier your skin is, the better laser hair removal works. We recommend using Restorative Gel in between and after treatments to calm and restore the skin, ensuring you receive optimum results.

Appointments usually last between 5-20 minutes

Technology developments in the laser hair removal field have led to fast, easy treatments. Since there is no down time after treatments, you can even get treated during your lunch break.

It is totally worth it

The average person spends over 100 days shaving over a lifetime. Waxing costs about the same as laser hair removal, but you have to do it forever instead of only 18 months, which adds up. Check out this  blog post that breaks down the math of laser hair removal vs. other methods of hair removal. Don’t believe us? Believe Buzzfeed.

Loving your body this February

February is the month of love, and at Simplicity Laser, we want to help all of our clients love their bodies. Our mission is simple: to transform people on the outside so they feel great inside. Our main focus is helping build confidence.

We live in a time where the media bombards us with images of the “perfect body” and  what beauty is supposed to look like.

No matter what you look like, we want you to always feel confident and beautiful. Over the years, we’ve heard countless stories of body hair holding people back from loving their bodies.

Like many other ladies can understand, I personally felt very held back by my body hair before laser hair removal. I remember being made fun of as a child for my dark facial hair. Since then, I’ve spent countless hours and hundreds of dollars trying every solution to get rid of the hair that stopped me from feeling beautiful. Laser hair removal was more for me than not having to wax and pluck anymore. The convenience was nice, but more than anything, laser hair removal empowered me. It helped me feel beautiful and love my body.

I’ll be the first to admit, not everyone needs laser hair removal to feel confident (check out this awesome story about a fellow Middle Easterner who went to social media about her body hair love). Body hair is a personal decision, and personally I’m really grateful for laser hair removal empowering me.

I want to hear about how laser hair removal has helped you love your body! Share your experience in the comments.

Love your laser

Here at Simplicity we pride ourselves on providing our clients the best possible experience. That's why we use top-of-the-line lasers in all of our clinics. Today we'd like to tell you a little bit more about the different types of lasers available and what they treat.

One of the more common types of laser used is called an IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). While this type of laser is effective for photo facials and treating certain skin conditions, it cannot permanently reduce or remove hair. It is effective at removing hair temporarily, but it has a 25% regrowth rate.

The types of lasers that we use here at Simplicity are ND:Yag and Alexandrite lasers. They are the most effective with the least amount of side effects and are FDA approved for permanent hair reduction. Using both laser platforms allows us to treat all skin tones and types. These lasers have a specific focus, unlike an IPL, and reach deeper into the hair follicle to destroy it more effectively. The following info graphic illustrates these differences. Our lasers are non-ionizing, meaning they do not use radiation and therefore cannot alter DNA. It’s important to closely follow pre- and post-treatment care instructions in order to get the best and safest results.

To learn more about our lasers, you can check out the official page for the lasers that we carry here.

Why you should use an antioxidant every day

We always hear about the importance of eating super foods for an amazing dose of antioxidants. The benefits of antioxidants extend past eating delicious fruits and veggies. Applying an antioxidant to your skin is just as important. Here are five reasons you should use an antioxidant every day.

Anti-aging

Using an antioxidant everyday will protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays that age the skin. Antioxidants reduce the appearance of wrinkles while preventing the skin from further aging from the sun.

Protection from environment

Antioxidants effectively neutralize chemical reactions generated when skin is exposed to environmental assailants such as pollution and sunlight.

Antioxidants protect the skin against the environment and are an excellent complement to sunscreen for enhanced protection. Antioxidants can even help with harsh climates. C E Ferulic is ideal for dry, cold climates, and Phloretin CF is perfect for hot, humid climates.

Gives your skin an extra boost

In spite of all of the time and effort you put into healthy skin, everyone can always use a little boost. C E Ferulic helps increase the firmness and laxity of the skin, while Phloretin CF helps re-texturize the skin, evens the skin tone for a firmer, brighter complexion, and diminishes dullness and discolorations.
